KUANTAN:
While some people may cast doubts about the country's racial unity,
a group of debaters convinced their audience on Monday that it had
never been stronger.
Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) debaters told the judges and the
crowd at a debating competition that racial unity had strengthened
after 50 years of independence.
Backed by facts and figures, the team showed there were smaller gaps
now in terms of social and economic status of the different ethnic
groups.
"Whatever issues raised by such groups, including Hindraf (Hindu
Rights Action Force), can be solved and will not affect the unity
that we have built over the past 50 years," said UiTM team leader or
"Prime Minister", Mohd Nizamuddin Abdul Hamid.
The UiTM team represented the "government" and had tabled a motion
entitled "Inter-racial Unity is Stronger After 50 Years of
Independence".
The "opposition" team was from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
Mohd Nizamuddin was backed by "Deputy Prime Minister" Mohd Faizal
Abu Bakar and Mohd Khairu-nizam Bakri who took on the role of "Unity
Minister".
For their strong arguments and confidence, the UiTM team emerged
champion in the third National Unity and Integration Inter-varsity
Debate.
The team received a trophy, certificates and RM5,000 from Minister
in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili.
Its team member, Mohd Khairunizam Bakri, was chosen as the best
debater.
UKM was represented by Ahmad Firdaus Mohd Isa, Panglima Jagumbar J.
Parisian and Khairul Anwar Salleh.
As first runner-up, the UKM team received RM4,000 and certificates.
